On a 3 hour walk (up the mountain) from Pokhara, the second largest city of Nepal, lies Sarangkot. Sixty houses, spread out on the hillsides, running up to the stately Annapurna Himalaya region, represent the settlement Sarangkot . The inhabitants, mostly Damais and Sharkis, belong to the lowest Hindu cast, sometimes also called the 'untouchables'. Previously, these people had honourable professions as shoemakers, tailors or carpetweavers. However, throughout the years, their knowledge weakened and it has become more plausible to many of them to work in the fields for the higher casts. This, of course, puts them even more in a dependent and exploitable position. Until now the inhabitants of Sarangkot never were given the opportunity to re-establish and further develop their culture, behaviour and social activities.
The basic hygiene and sanitary provisions have been lacking so diseases such as diareah, scabies, flu, pneumonia and a wide range of infections have flourished.
Quality of Life is dedicated to giving these people a second chance by assisting them with necessary primary education, healthcare, and specificly targetted programs to improve their social, economical, and cultural environment.
Quality of Life Nepal NGO, in co-operation with Global Child Welfare VZW, both supervised by Sabine Molemans (Belgium) and Ram Chandra Sharma (Nepal), renovated an empty school building in Sarangkot, which was abandonned years ago by another development organisation and by no means could be supported by the people of Sarangkot themselves.

A good 50 children, mostly neglected by their parents who left them unguarded while working in the fields, are given the most needed attention and education in the rejuvenated school compound. Adjacent to the school, Quality of Life constructed a medical post to ensure first aid and diagnose diseases which are common due to the existing barren life circumstances. Volunteers are assisting local teachers and nurses in acquiring the basic knowledge to be able to continue independently in the future.

You can help the Sarangkot Project by supporting individually a child by means of direct fostership.
If you require more information, the project-coördinator of the Sarangot Project will gladly assist you.
The Sarangkot Project is a co-operation with Global Child Welfare vzw.
